When our loved ones are going through a bad time, either emotionally or physically, we do our best to pick up the slack.
When a loved one ends up going to hospital for an unknown period of time, we can find ourselves under a different kind of pressure, not just in an emotional sense, but in a logistical one also. It can be a lot of head work, learning how to cope with this sort of situation, but what are the priorities?
Keep Daily Stresses Away
It is an overused expression, you just focus on getting better, but it helps everybody. Giving your loved one as little to worry about means that they can take a load off, and not focus on the money struggles. Yes, the financial aspects can cause a lot of anxiety, but if we’ve learnt anything, it’s that stress will always compound any form of illness.
When we get stressed and worried, we run ourselves into the ground, not just emotionally, but physically too. To help them get better as quickly as possible, you will, undoubtedly, look at what you can do to help, and maybe you can spare them the anxieties of financial worries, but also, consider the long-standing ramifications after they come out of the hospital. If your loved one has sustained a traumatic brain injury and there are a whole lot of legal ramifications to wade through, then you don’t want your loved one to think about all this, because it is undue stress.
Be A Calm Advocate
For some reason, we all seem to think that if we shout at the doctors and nurses, this will get us the information we want. While it’s understandably frustrating, you have to trust that they are doing everything they can for your loved one.
Rather than interfere with the proceedings, it’s better for you to keep an eye on what’s happening, so if there is something that seems untoward, or you have a major issue with how the hospital staff are dealing with the problem, then you can step in. Staying calm and logical will help your loved one feel safe and at peace if you have to step in as their advocate with the staff.
Remember To Rest
You will, no doubt, be dividing your time between work, home, and the hospital. You might not think there’s physically enough time for you to look after yourself. You might not even think yourself a priority, but if you are bearing the burden, you have to make sure you are functioning properly.
Looking after yourself, in many ways, is pretty straightforward. The trick is all about getting into a few simple habits. Breathing is one of those things that a lot of us don’t do properly, and there is a ted talk after this article showing you the benefits of proper breathing, but in a tense situation, doing this for 10 minutes when you wake up, and 10 minutes before you go to bed, could provide you with a lifetime of emotional resilience.
It certainly is a lot of brain work, but when we have a loved one in the hospital, we need to take it one step at a time, not get overwhelmed with the emotional or financial repercussions, but ensure they have the space necessary to recover properly.
