Starting a business and being a parent might not seem mutually exclusive. How are you ever going to find the time to start and run a company when you’re already raising a family? That’s true to some extent and there are a lot of businesses that you just wouldn’t be able to manage while you’re looking after your family.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t be your own boss because there are plenty of businesses that are perfect for parents (well, honestly, I think everyone should join the side hustle world). If you’re fed up with a tight budget or not working, but you don’t want to go back to working for somebody else, why not consider starting one of these great businesses?
Childcare is the most obvious business for a parent to start. You’ve already got the skills and you’re basically doing the job anyway, just add a bunch more kids and start getting paid for it and you’ve successfully started a child care business.
It’s cheap to set up, no up front costs required. Everything will already be there set up for you so you don’t need to spend money preparing or buying toys. The other major benefit is that you can have your own kids there so you don’t need to worry about who’s going to look after them while you’re working.
One option is to just run it from your home which is fine to start with, but once you start to grow, you’ll need somewhere bigger. Try to get a location which was previously a child care center. Parents will already know the location and you can immediately take on all of the clients who already use the company that you’ve bought, so there are fewer risks involved.
Traditional working practices are starting to fall out of fashion as more and more companies are downsizing their office spaces and moving toward remote work instead. Instead of hiring their own full-time employees for every single job, business owners are increasingly outsourcing to freelancers.
Being a virtual assistant is a great one for parents because you can take on as much or as little work as you’d like. You’ll be answering phone calls and emails, doing general admin and whatever else a company might need from you.
Once you’ve got a couple of clients on your books, you can make a good living from the comfort of your own home, and still look after the family at the same time. The setup is cheap as well, you’ll just need an office space in the home and a little money for advertising. You can find a lot of your work through social media or even people you know that might use a virtual assistant.
Setting up your own online store works for some people, but when you’re trying to juggle a family and a business it’s probably a bit too much work. But you can make good money online by reselling.
Setting the business up is cheaper and easier because you can use an existing platform like eBay or Amazon Marketplace to sell your goods on. The options are pretty much unlimited here, you can sell anything on there. If you want to start making good money, you need to work out what you can get the best profit margins on.
It’s best to pick a niche and deal mainly in those products because you’ll build up a reputation as the go to person for those kinds of items. It can be anything from second hand designer clothes to retro toys or furniture.
The best way to start an online reselling business is to have a look around the house and see what old stuff you’ve got. You can declutter your house, make a bit of money to buy more stock and also test the waters to see what sells best.
The best places to find new stock to sell are garage sales, charity shops and even antique shops. Just remember that the antique shop owners know the value of items so consider the price and whether you’ll be able to sell it for a profit or not before you buy it.
